Students raise funds for 1 Ringgit 1 Nation programme

Fadzil hands over to Ismail (left) a mock cheque for RM14,014, the sum collected by Unimas students for the 1 Ringgit 1 Nation programme.
Students at tertiary level should come up with ideas to raise funds for the needy.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Ismail Abdul Aziz said this at the handover ceremony of 1 Ringgit 1 Nation donations held at the restaurant of the University House, Canselori Building here in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday.

“This sort of forward thinking allows UTM and Unimas to collaborate to form the 1 Ringgit 1 Nation programme to help the homeless in the country.

“This is also in line with both universities’ wishes to help build students who are caring and concerned about the welfare of those less fortunate,” said Ismail, who is also advisor for the 1 Ringgit 1 Nation programme.

Meanwhile Unimas Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Alumni and Student Affairs) Prof Mohd Fadzil Abd Rahman said: “Students should direct their energies to carry out something beneficial, and if it is natural and spontaneous, will have a good course. Activities like the 1 Ringgit 1 Nation programme should be carried out more among students.”

The programme at Unimas led by programme director Nursyaheera Abu Bakar involved over 70 volunteers from March 10 to March 24. It raised RM14,014.

1 Ringgit 1 Malaysia UTM director Faezah Fazal said funds collected would go to helping about 400 homeless people in Medan, Indonesia from April 24 to 27.

“Before this, we distributed some RM4,000 of our previous collection in Kuala Lumpur to about 350 homeless there, and this time we will be going to Medan to distribute food and drinks to the homeless from the amount collected here,” Faezah said.
